Five Ways to Improve Your New Year Business Plans

2020 is right around the corner and for most small businesses the holidays are not only a time to reflect on the past year but to begin planning for the upcoming one. Sometimes as business owners, putting plans in place for an entire year with unknowns can seem overwhelming. Here are five tips to help you get started with your 2020 plans from the "What Works" business podcast by Tara McMullin and in the meantime, visit www.mythiclanding.com to see how one of our vast services can help your business succeed in the new year!

1. Double Down on Your Positioning
"Positioning is where your business sits in the market.  It’s the stories that your customers tell about your business.  It’s the message that you put out.  It’s how you do what you do differently.  It’s the price you set, it’s the packages or offers that you make, it’s how you show up in the market, and all those things come together to give you your positioning.  In other words, where you sit in the market.'

'Now, if you’re tempted to start something new, to add to your offerings, expand your audience, take a step back.  Does what you’re creating reinforce your brand?  The story it tells about your customers, the value you have to offer, or does it dilute your focus?"

2. Get Support From Diverse Sources
"So the first thing is that people seek out mastermind partners who are kind of going at the same pace they are, which might be slow to non-existent, and so the first way that you can get the most out of a mastermind is to actually…'

'Seek out people who are moving at a faster pace than you.
You want the people that you’re masterminding with, as a business owner, to actually push you, to challenge you, to inspire you to get a little more uncomfortable, to do things a little more outside of your comfort zone, and really use that to propel your business forward."

3. Know Your Top Priority At Any Given Time
"Now, one of the biggest benefits of planning ahead, whether it’s for the month, the quarter, or the year, is that it becomes easier to spot your top priorities.'

'These priorities will show themselves as specific goals.  So if you look, at your next year’s plans or your next quarter’s plans, you’ll see some specific goals, hopefully, that you’ve set for yourself.  The more specific, the easier it will be to know what’s important for you and your team to be focused on."

4. Separate Your Marketing Plans From Your Sales Plans
"If you’re overlapping building awareness with converting sales, you’re probably not building as much awareness as you’d like to be doing, and you’re probably converting sales less than you would like to be doing, and no small business owner wants to be in that situation."

5. Make a Plan to Step Back While Letting Your Business Grow
"Now, a lot of people are going to put delegation and team-building on their new year business plans, but it’s not enough to just hire people to ease your workload.  As my friend, Peter Lang, from the Uhuru Network marketing agency, told me in regards to myself and my own business, you have to offload responsibility, too.'

'This is where so many small business owners go wrong, myself included, from time to time."  (To read on further and get more detail on each of these tips visit: http://taragentile.com/new-year-business-plans/)

Trust Yourself and Trust Your Plan!

Sometimes as business owners we need to stop and look inward to ask ourselves the tough questions. For example, when it comes to building your business, do you fully trust yourself, your program and business plan? It's easier than one might think to lose sight of your goals and motivation when we stop trusting ourselves.

MLE can help you learn to trust your program by developing a viable business plan to cover all aspects of your business. A business plan is the foundation for your entire operation; without it, your business will have nothing to stand on. You wouldn’t want to have a cracked or crumbling foundation on your house, just like you don’t want to base your company on a weak business plan. If you are interested in learning more about how MLE can strengthen your business, contact Margaret@mythiclanding.com or visit: www.mythiclanding.com.

Ways to Track Ideas On the Go

Business owners are busy! That's no secret. Especially in the smaller organizational setting business owners tend to "wear multiple hats" with varied responsibilities and are constantly on the go. But we also know that sometimes the best ideas for your business tend to spring up at random times when it's not convenient to pop open your laptop or tablet and write it all down. So what can a crazed business owner do to help keep track of their ideas as they pop into mind?

In this article from fortune.com, they detail five apps which can help track those ideas and keep them organized!

How to Prioritize Work When Everything Feels Like #1

A lot of time in talking with our clients across all areas of business, they feel that prioritizing tasks effectively can be a major hurdle to overcome. Why? Because in most businesses, especially in small businesses, many tasks feel like they are all of equal importance on the to-do list. Thanks to an article from Liquid Planner, they offer six steps to help manage your deadlines and get your team motivated!

1. Collect a list of all your tasks.
Pull together everything you could possibly consider getting done in a day. Don’t worry about the order or the number of items up front.

2. Identify urgent vs. important.
The next step is to see if you have any tasks that need immediate attention. We’re talking about work that, if not completed by the end of the day or in the next several hours, will have serious negative consequences (missed client deadline; missed publication or release deadlines, etc.).

3. Assess value.
Next, look at your important work and identify what carries the highest value to your business and organization. As a general practice, you want to recognize exactly which types of tasks have top priority over the others.

4. Order tasks by estimated effort.
If you have tasks that seem to tie for priority standing, check their estimates, and start on whichever one you think will take the most effort to complete.

5. Be flexible and adaptable.
Uncertainty and change are given. Know that your priorities will change, and often when you least expect them to. But—and here’s the trick—you also want to stay focused on the tasks you’re committed to completing.

6. Know when to cut.
You probably can’t get to everything on your list. After you prioritize your tasks and look at your estimates, cut the remaining tasks from your list, and focus on the priorities that you know you must and can complete for the day. Then take a deep breath, dive in and be ready for anything (Liquid Planner.com)."  To read more about these six tips, click here for the entire article!

If you want help getting your business back on track, or just need an extra set of hands to complete some of your urgent tasks, MLE can help! Learn more about the wide variety of services we offer at: www.mythiclanding.com today!

MLE Client Milkhouse Brewery In the News Again!

Tom Barse, Owner of Milkhouse Brewery.
MLE is proud of all of our clients and we love sharing when one of them is mentioned in the news locally or nationally. MLE client, Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm, was recently mentioned in the Frederick Newspost in an article entitled 'Frederick area farmers a growing part of local beer brewing market.'

The article talks about how local Maryland brewers, specifically in Frederick County, are looking to keep the majority of their ingredients from local sources. Brewers want to buy and use local hops, yeast and grain but currently the supply can't keep up with the demand. While Milkhouse Brewery keeps 90% of their ingredients local, other Frederick County breweries outsource some of their main ingredients from all over the world. But no matter where brewers buy their ingredients, the farmers and brewers interviewed did agree that the craft beer scene countywide doesn’t appear to be slowing down, especially in Frederick.

Frederick City is definitely key to this market … Frederick County has just become a destination spot, and the city’s on fire,” Blackmon said.

It’s a marketing thing, people love the whole farm to table movement, the field to pint idea, I mean people like to know where their food comes from,” Barse said. “That’s what we’re doing here.” To read the entire article click here.

Congratulations to Milkhouse Brewery on your continued success! We are proud to have you as a part of #TeamMLE!  Learn more about us at: www.mythiclanding.com!

MLE Client Spotlight Mention: Milkhouse Brewery

MLE client, Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm, was recently mentioned for their participation in the University of Maryland Western Maryland Research & Education Center's hop variety education day where brewers from all over the state came to learn more about the various hop varieties grown in Maryland. "The university’s half-acre hopyard contains 24 hop varieties in three replicated research plots. About 30 attendees endured temperatures in the high 90s with a barely noticeable breeze to learn about this plant, which grows in long strands called bines and produces cones that give beer its distinctive flavor
(Lancaster Farming)."

Farm-based breweries have grown since Milkhouse, Maryland's first farm-based brewery, began lobying in 2012 for the farm brewery law so that more local ingredients can be exclusively used in their products. For the entire article click here.

MLE & SEM: What can we do for your website?

Do you have a web site?  If the answer is yes, are you utilizing your web site to it's full potential? As you can imagine, a growing portion of the population is turning to Google and other search engines for help when shopping for most anything these days. Need a new farrier? New feed store? New vet?  Simply type in your keyword and location into Google and pages of results will pop up.  But how do you get YOUR web site to pop up on the first page?  This is where MLE comes in!

We offer a complete Search Engine Marketing Service for clients looking to boost their online presence.  To be more specific, "SEM" is the process of doing certain tasks to try and gain more traffic from the "free" or "organic" listings on search engines to your web site.  SEM also utilizes paid tools like Google AdWords and Pay-Per-Click advertising when necessary.  MLE specifically targets the Google search engine.

If you want to learn more, give Margaret a call (301.502.8929) or e-mail (margaret@mythiclanding.com). Remember that consultations are free!
