Gaithersburg, Maryland - Mythic Landing Enterprises and the United States Eventing Association (USEA) are joining forces to highlight the growing Young Event Horse (YEH) and Future Event Horse (FEH) programs. A new online column on USEventing.com will feature horses and riders that have made an impact on the young horse community, and both participants and graduates of the YEH and FEH programs. The articles will range in topic from training tips for the up-and-comers of the sport, to profiles of riders, owners, judges and horses, with a spotlight on American-bred horses.
“I'm thrilled to be teaming up with the USEA for this new online column. Many of Mythic Landing's clients are active participants in the Future Event Horse and Young Event Horse programs, so this is a great match!” said Margaret Rizzo McKelvy, President of Mythic Landing Enterprises. “We're very much looking forward to bringing you both FEH and YEH success stories, as well as insightful training pieces with some of our country's best young horse trainers.”
Readers will have the privilege of learning what the YEH and FEH judges are looking for when they evaluate youngsters in competitions. 4 Reasons Why Every Rider Should Volunteer

Another blog post by MLE intern Emily Goldstein!

Emily's view for the day ...
This past weekend I volunteered as a cross-country jump judge for the Novice and Training Three Day at Waredaca. It was a beautiful day and I had a great spot to judge from. My jump (number 15) overlooked the pond and also allowed me to see a few other jumps around the course. I think I was just as excited to watch as the riders were to compete.

The first thing I noticed when I arrived for the jump judge briefing was that the group of jump judges ranged from adult amateurs to professional, upper-level riders. It was great to see all types of riders giving their time to help the event run smoothly. Besides jump-judging, there are many jobs volunteers can perform such as scribes, ring stewards, runners, ring crew, and timers. All riders should find some time to volunteer and here’s why:

1.     We should all do our part in giving back. If you compete and plan to continue to compete, you should return the favor and support the resources that you benefit from. Under-staffed events stretch volunteers very thin making them less-likely to want to volunteer in the future.

2.     You can learn a lot by volunteering. Volunteering at horse shows or events can provide less experienced riders with a sense of what happens at shows and what the atmosphere is like. This can be helpful if you have never shown before or have little experience with the environment.

3.     Volunteering brings people together. Because there is such a diverse crowd of people who volunteer, it is also a good way to meet friends, make connections, and build a sense of community.

4.     This should never be the main reason for volunteering, but often, volunteering has its perks. Sometimes you will be given compensation like a schooling pass, jacket, or shirt. Waredaca offered hats, shirts, jackets and lunch to their volunteers at their three-day event last week.

The Fair Hill Experience

This past weekend, MLE intern Emily headed up to Fair Hill for a day of cross country. She chronicled her experience here!

Phillip Dutton galloping by!
This past Saturday, I spent my day watching the cross country at Fair Hill. There is no other experience equal to that of a big international competition that brings such a large group of “horse-people” together. You can really feel the bond of fellow horse-people at an event like this. Of course, there is a competitive spirit but everyone is also rooting for all the riders to come home safely so there is a huge sense of community among hundreds of people. It’s very fun to cheer all of the riders on as they go by. It’s also very cool to get to watch your equivalent of a movie star do “their thing.”

When you enter the fairgrounds you are immediately overwhelmed by all of the things going on. Do I go browse through the vendors? Do I try some food? Where should I stand to get the best view of the cross country? Did I mention there were over one hundred horses in the 2* and over fifty in the 3*? Cross country went from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. It was certainly an action-packed day!

Besides getting to walk around the cross country course and see your riding idols close enough to touch as they go by, there is an abundance of things to do at Fair Hill. Of course, there is great food and drinks, but there is a trade fair, pony rides, dog agility courses, tailgating, and anything else your equestrian heart might desire. I’ll admit, I left with a new pair of boots for my horse.

Cross country day is something that can be appreciated by all. It’s like Nascar in the way that even if you aren’t familiar with the sport it’s still fun and exciting for anybody to watch. I brought my non-horsey boyfriend with me and I’m pretty sure he enjoyed it a lot more than coming to my horse shows and he definitely enjoyed the food and all of the dogs there. The thrill of cross country is something everyone can enjoy. All equestrians should try to come out to Fair Hill or an event like it at some point; it’s a great experience!

Stephen Bradley and Susan Graham White are BACK!

Two of our favorite clinicians are coming back to A Bit Better Farm in Brookeville, MD for some last minute prep before the official end of the season. Susan Graham White is up first on October 27th and will be teaching from 12:15-7:00. One 45-minute private is $130. Susan specializes in building a solid foundation of communication between horse and rider which produces incredible results. A USEF 'R' Judge, Susan is great for offering solutions to a certain issue you've been having or if you want to practice your test before your next event. There is only one spot left so be sure to contact Margaret if you would like the last slot!

Stephen will be returning on November 5th to teach small group jump lessons. Groups will start around 11am and end at 7pm. Each group will have no more than 3 riders to offer plenty of individualized attention. Lessons are $115 per rider. Private lessons are available but there is limited availability for $155. Stephen's exercises and use of grid works keeps the horses on their toes and always thinking about what's next. Stephen's encouraging yet challenging way makes you and your horse walk away feeling extra confident and that you're ready for anything! This is the perfect lesson to take as a last prep before a competition.

As always, auditing is FREE! We encourage you to come by to take in some of the great information to try back at home!

To reserve your spot in one or both of these clinics, contact Margaret McKelvy today at margaret@mythiclanding.com!

Hello, Goodbye ... changes at MLE!

I wanted to quickly post about some upcoming staffing changes at Mythic Landing Enterprises. The Maryland Horse Council BBQ on September 13th will be Sue O'Donnell's last official day at MLE.  While we are sad to see her go, we wish her the very best in her future endeavors.

With every end, there is always a new beginning, and I'm thrilled to welcome Carly Easton to the MLE team. Carly is a lifelong horsewoman and avid eventer, having competed through Training-level on her longtime partner Cooperstown Caliber. She is a recent graduate of High Point University, with a degree in Strategic Communications and minor in Marketing. She served as the captain of her IHSA team during her sophomore and junior year and had the opportunity this past year to be the assistant to the Vice President of Communications for the Country Music Association during the CMA awards in Nashville. Additionally, Carly is the new head coach of the JV equestrian team for her alma mater, The Academy of the Holy Cross.

I have known Carly personally for a number of years, and I'm sure that everyone will come to appreciate her organization, enthusiasm and creativeness as much as I do.

"This Old Horse"

I saw this on Facebook this morning and just had to share. I believe our old critters should be cherished and spoiled, which is just what I intend to do with Lissell.  :-)
"This Old Horse"
This old horse, the Rancher said,
she’s seen some better days,
she’s eating up my profits,
and costs a lot for hay.

Another horse would suit me,
a stronger one at that,
shes seen a lot of miles
just like my cowboy hat.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
she helped me herd my steer,
I’m pretty sure shes magic,
I know I hold her dear.

Another horse would suit me,
one that can run fast,
maybe one that’s younger,
or maybe one that lasts.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
she’s long and far in tooth,
my children do remember,
her fondly from their youth.

Another horse would suit me,
a gelding in his prime,
one that needs less fixin’,
that helps me save a dime.

Why, they asked, then keep her?
why not trade her now?
bring her to an auction?
replace her with a cow?

The Rancher's brow grew heavy,
he took a staggered step,
his eyes did show his hardships,
in wrinkles, as they crept.

His breath, he took in deeply,
as he poised to say his words,
it’s as if the earth grew silent,
that his message should be heard.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
has given me her life,
I wouldn’t trade for anything,
nor either, would my wife.

Another horse would suit me,
and perhaps someday will come,
but this old gal, I love her,
she is the chosen one.

This old horse, the Rancher said,
her service she did lend,
her and I, have seen the years,
this old horse, she is my friend.

Another horse would suit me well,
but her home is here to keep,
I owe her sanctuary,
my love for her is deep.

Another horse would suit me well,
and younger days for me,
and I will keep my promise,
until our last breaths, set us free."

When I Am An Old Horsewoman ...

A good friend forwarded this to me, and I just had to share!

When I Am An Old Horsewoman
I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me
And I shall spend my social security on
white wine and carrots,
And sit in my alleyway of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.

I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to ALL
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old.

Great Results at Carolina International!

Courtney Cooper with Who's A Star
at an event last year.
A bunch of the MLE riders were out competing at the inaugural Carolina International CIC & Horse Trials. We had some top finishes including:

Will Faudree WON the CIC1* with Riesling De Buissy!  He also finished 3rd in the same division with Pfun!  Both of these rising stars are owned by Sterling Silver Stables' Jennifer Mosing.

Courtney Cooper and her homebred Who's A Star (aka "Tag") were 6th in a huge Advanced division! Look for this pair to tackle a CCI3* this spring!

Katie Wherley competed in her first horse trials since having her son Niko at the beginning of January. She took her Advanced horse Mr. Indiscretion in an Open Preliminary division to stretch their legs and came away with a 6th place ribbon!  Next up for them in the CIC2* at The Fork!

Finally, Southwind Farm's Sheri Thornley finished 3rd in a big Open Training division aboard her own homebred Azari!

New! C.O.R.E. Rider Clinic!

One of Mythic Landing’s clients, Playland Farm, is doing something for the first time that we are really excited about and want to share! They are hosting a C.O.R.E. Rider clinic on Saturday, March 22nd.  C.O.R.E. Rider is a program that Playland’s owner and resident trainer, Glenda Player, has been working towards for many years now, including multiple trips to Bad Tolz, Germany each year for proper certification.

So, you may be wondering, what exactly is C.O.R.E. Rider? CORE Rider is an acronym for Centered, Organized, Responsive, Effective riding. Through this method one learns how to use aids in a clearer, more organized and effective manner, thus developing a responsive, balanced horse. The method assists in learning a clearer sense of awareness of one’s own movements and use of self. In the process, the method promotes ease of movement, coordination, and flexibility. At the heart of the CORE Rider method is teaching oneself a greater awareness of his/her own movement. CORE Riding is about learning stability and balance through alignment.

The clinic will be broken up into two parts: an un-mounted group session and then mounted small group lessons afterwards. This format allows for riders to work on themselves and their body in the morning session without having to worry about their horse. Then, once they have the basics down, they will take what they learn in the morning and apply it while mounted in the small group riding lesson.

For more information you can visit, www.playlandequestriancenter.com, OR, to sign up for the clinic you can email Erinn Murphy at: emurphy@arbee.net
