The drama!

It's been established that I love Lissell.  We've been a team for quite awhile and know each other pretty well.  So I tacked her up for a quick ride yesterday and the plan was to play over trot poles.  She started off lovely, but I felt like she was a little weak behind.  I had been thinking about starting some sort of Adequan/Legend routine, so I figured I would finish my ride and then call my vet to discuss the options.  Then we cantered, and she started fuddling into the canter and kicking out during it.  Now Lissell is not the easiest to ride, but she does not do bad things like kick out or buck or anything like that.  So I stopped the ride, and brought her back to the barn.

We untacked and put her sheet on and put her in her stall, where she immediately laid down.  Something I've never seen Lissell do before in her stall.  Hmmm.  Somethings not right.  Then she starts groaning and looking at her belly.  Oh please Lissell, please don't colic!  So I sit with her for awhile, she's not rolling and has normal vital signs.  It was around 4pm, so I called my vet before he finished up for the day.  I ended up giving her a 1/2 tube of UlcerGard (it's all I had) and some banamine.  Well I guess me messing with her mouth was enough to bother her and she got right up and started begging for food.  I gave her some hay and checked on her awhile later and decided she looked good enough to get half of her dinner.

She trotted out to the field with the other horses and made some grumpy faces at the gelding, so I figured all was well again.  I kept an eye on her while I finished feeding the barn, and checked on her again before I left, and all seemed ok.

Oh Lissell.  The drama.  You scared the begeezes out of me.

Southern Pines Recap

Ok, so I was definitely horrible about blogging while away.  In fact, aside from keeping in touch via my phone (and I even forgot that at the hotel one day) I didn't open my computer once.  So here's a recap of the weekend ...

Thursday: I was moving a little slow that morning because of the aforementioned touch of food poisoning.  I hacked Lissell in the morning and then tried to do a little flatwork.  Have I mentioned before that Lissell isn't a big fan of dressage?  I can't really blame her.  She was a jumper in her previous life and apparently wore some serious hardware while competing.  But she tries.  I ended up riding her for an hour, and promptly went and took a nap in the truck for an hour or so.

Then we packed up and went cross country schooling at a local farm.  Now Miss Lissell hasn't been cross country since 2005, so I really had no idea what to expect.  We were trying out the new bit/hackamore combination bit that Kelley created and it worked like a charm.  Of course Lissell was just perfect.  It was like she had never missed a beat.  All was going well until we went to drop down a little drop into the water.  Apparently Lissell's front feet slipped on landing and she just couldn't recover.  I got pitched off as she went down on her shoulder and somehow landed underneath her.  But Lissell being Lissell (aka the best horse in the entire world) she somehow contorted herself in a series of "yoga moves" to not step on me as she got up.  Needless to say, falling off in the water sucks.  I was cold, wet and shivering, but somehow escaped with only a bruised knee and jaw.  I say this once people ... buy an air vest.  I'm positive that my Hit Air vest took the brunt of this fall.  I was able to take the top half of my wet clothes off and change into a fleece.  I hopped back on to just hack around and ended up jumping a few more things just to make sure I still could.

That night I went back to the hotel and passed out while everyone else went out to dinner.  Lissell got extra carrots and hugs that night.

Friday: Easy day.  I had a flat lesson with Kelley in the morning and it was just what we needed.  While I sometimes still get frustrated with how difficult she is on the flat, Kelley keeps reminding me that she's progressing at an extremely fast rate.

Saturday: Dressage for me wasn't until 3pm, so there was a lot of waiting going on.  But with 5 horses in our crew, I stayed busy.  Here's a brief recap.  Rumble had a good dressage test for Rumble.  Then Kelley did dressage on Athena, who did great for her first event.  This mare is going to be a power house!  Then it was off to cross country with Rumble, but unfortunately he whacked a stifle on a jump and Kelley pulled up.  He'll live to run another day, but was feeling pretty sorry for himself that day.  At some point Julie did dressage and rocked it with Tex per usual.  Athena show jumped like a veteran.  She came into the ring and acknowledged the crowd like the diva that she is.  Comet had a super dressage test and show jumped greenly but cleanly later.  And Julie and Tex had another super stadium round.

Lissell's dressage was good ... for her.  Kelley helped me warm up with was a life saver.  Unfortunately the judge didn't think so, and our score was a bit embarrassing.  But oh well, such is life.  We show jumped at 4:40 and after switching to Lissell's new bit/hackamore, we had a lovely warm up and jumped double clear.  I have to admit that I was still a bit tentative about jumping after my crash on Thursday, but Lissell is such a veteran that she was like, "I got this girl, just hold on for the ride."  Seriously, I love this horse.

Sunday: The day started a bit later since Rumble sat out his show jumping.  Athena was the first horse on course, and she's just great.  She has upper level written all over her.  Julie and Tex rocked it and had a brief moment of miscommunication at the water, but the rest of the course was spot on.  Then it was Lissell's turn, and she was perfect.  She has a huge stride, and doesn't really know what it is to go 325mpm, so I just let her cruise along and then set her up for each fence.  Perfection.  I forgot how much fun it is to go cross country on this mare.  I'm just so lucky.  I know I say that a lot, but I am.  As Kelley put it, she has a lot of wisdom and is happy to use it for our benefit.

Ok, off to the barn to unpack.  Blah.  Sorry for any typos, I just wanted to get this up.  I'll check in later tonight to proof read and add photos.

Waiting out the rain

Blah blah rain. Waiting for the rain to stop so we can go cross country schooling.

Settled in

We're all settled in. Lissell and I went for a quick hack and then a short trot and canter to stretch her legs. The other horses were a bit fresh which made me all the more thankful for Miss Lissell's age and experience.

Today we're hacking in the morning and then cross country schooling this afternoon.

I had a bit of food poisoning last night which is making me move a little slow this morning.

Driving to SP

We've been on the road since 5:15. We stopped to get gas and offer everyone water. Tex had taken all of Lissell's hay out of the net so we did some rearranging and are back on the road. Julie is driving this second leg of the trip. I'm so thankful she's here!

That's Lissell with the flymask and Tex in my trailer. Kelley has Rumble, Comet and Athena in her big rig.

It's always something ...

With horses it's always something.  First it was a "not quite right" day or two that was quickly fixed with pour-in pads (Thanks Mike!).  Then I get out to the barn today and pull off Lissell's blanket to discover a big 'ol hematoma on her left side right under her last three ribs.  After a mini-meltdown in the barn aisle, friend Stephanie Tadlock and trainer Kelley Williams were able to reason with me that while it looks ugly it's no where near her saddle and she's perfectly sound, so she'll be just fine for the trip.  So I quickly tacked up and had one of the best dressage lessons on Lissell that I've ever had.  One step at a time.  Maybe by the times she's 20 we'll be able to pull off a good dressage test!  For this upcoming weekend, I'm just focusing on having fun.  It's her first event since 2005, and I'm just so so so incredibly thankful to have her back in my life.  Getting to ride and jump her is just icing on the cake.

Above is one of my favorite photos of Lissell.  That's us going Novice at Redland in '05.  She likes to fly.  :-)

Position Available at Mythic Landing Events

MLE is growing faster than I thought and after much thought, I've decided that it is time to hire an Account Manager.  Keep reading for a basic job description …

RESPONSIBILITIES

** Account Manager (AM) will be responsible for a set amount of clients. AM will be responsible for all aspects of that client's account.

** MLE does everything from one-time press releases to annual ad campaigns to finding sponsors for top riders to creating web sites.  Basically, we cater to the needs of our clients.  No job is too small … or too big.

SCHEDULE

** AM will be required to come into the MLE office (in Gaithersburg/Damascus, MD) for a minimum of 4-8 hours each week. All other work can be done from AM's home.

MISC NOTES

** MLE's graphic design team will be available for AM's use for a set number of hours each month. The graphic design team can be utilized for ad and web design.

** AM will have access to MLE's database and supplies.

** AM should have a love of writing, everything from blogs to articles to web site copy.

** AM should have knowledge of the horse industry (read: should know what USET is and be able to name/describe almost all of the disciplines represented).

** AM should be super creative, outgoing and well-disciplined.

PAYMENT

** Commission based.  To be discussed individually with each applicant.

I think it would be the perfect position for a stay-at-home mom with young kids at school, or a grad student.  But really, someone could just take this position and run with it, making it into a full-time gig.

If you're interested, please e-mail your resume and a writing sample to margaret@mythiclandingevents.com

Lissell gets studs

Lissell gets stud holes drilled today.   I guess that means I have to event her again. :-D
